Christian Heritage of Colombia
Overview / Highlights
9 NIGHTS / 10 DAYSColombia is a devout country with religious architecture that reflects its history and diversity. Its churches and cathedrals are some of its most impressive monuments, each with its own unique story, a testament to key moments in the country's history. Some say that Colombia does not have an official religion. However, Roman Catholicism is the dominant faith and deeply culturally pervasive. The Spanish, and the Roman Catholic religion, arrived in Colombia in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization, ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá. Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886 and Panama seceded in 1903. Come join us on this fascinating journey where we explore beautiful Colombia, the colonial and modern sides. We will show you Colombian art, culture, and history, all while savoring the stunning green of the savannas and the outstanding mountains.

In March 1983, moments before the much-celebrated Maundy Thursday religious procession was set to depart, a violent earthquake shook the town, caving in the cathedral's roof and killing hundreds.
